Au sein d’une ferme expérimentale tendant vers la permaculture, Holy Palm Tree s’implante dans un décor urbain au cœur de Los Angeles. Composée d’objets hétéroclites, trouvés en masse sur place mais originaires pour la plupart de Chine, cette installation sacralise le palmier, icône de la Californie à l’étranger. Cet arbre symbolique, illustrant les cartes postales de Los Angeles, souvent accompagné du célèbre couché de soleil, fut importé des Canaries. Considérant une des approches de la permaculture — telle que l’utilisation de matériaux naturels, comme de l’argile et du bois existant naturellement sur le site en petite quantité, pour la construction des différents éléments architecturaux — Holy Palm Tree devient paradoxal entre icône paysager et marchandises importées au sein d’un essai de permaculture.

Holy Palm Tree is the second installation in America. Within an experimental farm tending to permaculture, Holy Palm Tree sets up in an urban surrounding in the heart of Los Angeles. During the first weeks in Los Angeles, we thought about the local architecture, the symbols and icons into the landscape, etc.. Then, we selected a typical icon : the palm tree which is found throughout the city of Los Angeles. It is the symbol of the city abroad and is imported (the palm tree in the experimental farm is from the Canaries).
To create the structure, we solely used industrialized materials manufactured in China found at the permaculture site of the farm. Considering permaculture is a design approach that seeks to use only natural elements (like clay and wood naturally existing on the land), our exhibition is paradoxical because both the palm tree and the materials used from the site are imported goods and do not originate from this land.
